Internship programme at ABWA.

The expert in anything was once a beginner.

An internship work experience for students in International School in Mumbai is a temporary job role often related to one's academic field of study or career interests. This helps provide a glimpse into a particular industries culture if student truly want to commit to a particular type of work or career in future.

While most students in International schools in Mumbai take up internship for University credits, but every student comes back with a lot of learning from the 3 week on the job training period.

Internship is planned as a 3-week work experience program facilitated by International Schools in Mumbai like ABWA for their grade 11 IB (International Baccalaureate) and AS (Cambridge International) to help them get a hands on experience in the area of their interest during their summer holidays.

ABWA students have interned and are interning at various organisations like Fountainhead, RPG, Colors TV, Jaslok Hospital, Kokilaben Hospital, Saifee Hospital, Ferrari showroom, ABSTC, Vogue, Muktangan, Pantaloons, BITS Hyderabad, and Schbang among many others.

So what difference do these internships really make?

Each internship has taught so many life skills, apart from work skills to students of International School in Mumbai (who have never set foot in a local train).

A group keen on Hydrology research chose to travel by local train, and then a local tum-tum all the way to Panvel, collect water samples and then analyse the same, create weekly reports. The journey was a thrilling experience as much as the research. To quote “this simple activity helped us in understanding what Mumbai travel is truly like. We understood the trials of travel in local train, met interesting people, our journey as well as at our work place.

Yet another group learnt the various ways a retail outlet should take care to ensure little or no shoplifting happens. Sitting on the shop floor looking at pre orders, taking stock of material sold and how they could do better the next day, making suggestions to shoppers, gave some students of Aditya Birla World Academy summer internship a huge sense of confidence in their developed new skills.

Most of our Aditya Birla World Academy students are inspired to help others right from their young age with CAS and community service and thus medical administrative internship at Hospitals is sought by many. While it gives them a sense of community wellbeing, they realise the difficult life of a doctor a nurse and even the admin section of a hospital and the challenges are much beyond only saving life’s.

When a young 17-year-old steps out of his/her protective cocoon of home and school to experience different work environments it expands their academic horizon and a capacity to adapt to various challenging situations. Interacting and learning from full time professions widens horizons for them it gives them the maturity of handling conflicts and to take a “no” for a job done and to redo work again and again. The patience comes from this too.

This holistic learning from meeting with people with global perspectives and real life challenges helps students of International School in Mumbai adapt to different cultures and people and truly be students who are compassionate, open minded and global citizens of the world.
